Overview STI 2012

The Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC) is at the center of an international movement to rase a generation of students equipped and inspired to comprehend, analyze, and create with the tools of 21st century communication: visual and aural media. JBFC’s Summer Teachers Institutes prepare Pre-K – Grade 12 educators to be literate in visual texts and empower their students to be active viewers, critical thinkers, engaged world citizens, and inspired creators. This summer, each Institute provides a dynamic and through provoking experience and also contextualizes film and media for classroom use.

Participation

Institute runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a total of 30 hours/2 credits. Faculty from the JBFC’s Education Department and special guests and filmmakers will provide instruction.

Program

From Viewing to Doing, July 16-20
In this hands-on, project-based class, participants will create and innovate in a supportive production based environment. This introductory course is perfect for educators who have been eager to integrate media projects into their curriculum, or are just interested in expanding their own skill as makers. Both PC and Mac platforms will be supported and participants will have an opportunity to experiment with a range of animation and live-action software. Participants will gain first-hand experience by producing their own projects and then exploring implementation in the classroom. The course will meet at the JBFC’s Media Arts Lab, 405 Manville Road.

Advanced Institute, Cinemas of Resistance and Change, July 23-27
For over a century, motion pictures have reflected our lives, challenged our ideas, delved into our fears, exhilarated our imagination, and had the power to shift perspectives. Now with the pervasive access to production tools, technology, and distribution networks, the potential for media to influence cultural and political ideas and actions has become even more pronounced. Participants will engage with media that is made with the intention of changing minds or policy as well as works that inadvertently shift public thought. We will view a wide range of films and media forms, including historical works and examples being generated as the Institute takes place. Pre-requisite: A previous Summer Teachers Institute and/or strong foundation in cinema studies. The course will meet at the JBFC Theater, 364 Manville Road.
